This system, known as the Blood Bank Management System (BBMS), was introduced in 2023 by the Blood Transfusion Division of RBC. It is designed as a nationwide digital network connecting 30 districts, five regional blood centers, four national referral hospitals, and over 80 healthcare facilities.

The platform enables donors to schedule appointments online with ease, while hospitals and blood banks can monitor blood stock levels in real time. This innovation eliminates delays, reduces waste, and ensures that blood supplies reach patients when and where they are needed most.

Making Blood Donation Easy and Accessible

One of the biggest barriers to voluntary blood donation in many countries is accessibility and convenience. In Rwanda, that barrier has now been broken.

According to Dr. Thomas Muyombo, Director of Kigali’s Regional Center for Blood Transfusion, the BBMS makes the donation process straightforward for anyone who qualifies. Citizens aged 18 to 60 years, weighing at least 50 kilograms, can register online to become blood donors. Healthy donors can give blood every 56 days and platelets every 14 days, with a potential of 24 donations annually.

This flexibility not only makes the process donor-friendly but also encourages consistent contributions to Rwanda’s blood supply.

Impressive Early Results

The results from this digital transformation are already evident. In 2023, Rwanda collected 86,812 units of blood, up from 78,838 units in 2022. This steady growth is a clear indication that the BBMS has inspired more people to participate in voluntary blood donation.

• Redistribute supplies instantly across districts in case of shortages.
• Reduce waste dramatically, ensuring every unit of donated blood is put to life-saving use.

Expanding the Platform: Partnership with Irembo

The government’s commitment to healthcare digitization took another leap in May 2024 when RBC partnered with Irembo, Rwanda’s leading e-government service provider.

Through this partnership, donors now enjoy enhanced digital access to advanced screening services. These include tests for:

• HIV
• Hepatitis B and C
• Syphilis
• Coombs testing
• Blood group typing

Most results are available within a week, giving both donors and medical professionals peace of mind about the safety and compatibility of donated blood.

This partnership not only improves transparency but also strengthens trust in Rwanda’s blood donation system, encouraging more citizens to become regular donors.

Transforming Hospitals and Patient Care

The impact of the BBMS is being felt directly in hospitals across Rwanda. A powerful example comes from Inkuru Nziza Orthopedic Specialized Hospital in Gikondo, where the new system has dramatically changed day-to-day operations.

Previously, the hospital faced serious challenges in securing reliable blood supplies. Surgeries were often delayed, and rare blood types like O-negative and A-negative were particularly difficult to access.

With the BBMS in place, the hospital now manages its own efficient in-house blood bank. Surgeries proceed on schedule, transfusion needs are met promptly, and patients requiring rare blood types no longer face dangerous delays.

Medical professionals such as Dr. Martin Mbarushimana and laboratory scientist Rebecca Ishimwe have praised the system for reducing waste, optimizing resources, and improving overall patient care.
